There is action and inaction throughout the form. Be careful that your tranquility in movement does not destroy the dynamic nature of sword play. Relaxation is not equal to vacancy of intent or sloppiness of exposition. As a general rule in Tai Chi sword work, keep the postures integrated and constant. The movements of the body and limbs must be corresponding and co-ordinated, especially the combination of the sword-sabre playing techniques, handwork and footwork, which must be harmonious and unified. The saying when one moves, everything is moving tells us that we must guard against moving the hands without moving the feet or against moving the sabre without moving the hands. TCM has several effective diagnostic methods which are used in Herbology, Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Qi-gong breathing exercises. The first to be considered is Pulse diagnosis. In Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) there are six pulses can be examined by palpation of the radial artery in the following manner:In the first paired pulse the method is to ascertain the sensation felt at the fingertips When one presses lightly with the fingertip, the artery is located very superficially, as if floating. Curiously however in original Indian classic medical texts (Vedas) dating back to 7000 years ago we find descriptions of the use of needle treatment. These Vedas document Indian needle techniques completely. The Suchi Veda is one such volume and dates needle use on the ear at 3000 years. The Indian acupuncture systems include 180 body points known as Marma which may harm or cause injury. As with most classic medical systems both Indian and Chinese use cosmological schematics which are highly defined belief structures like Yin and Yang, Gods and Elements, the Spiritual and Substantial. The precepts of a system root the medical knowledge to be revised through evolution and experience. This is traditional knowledge, respected and proven. The Hindu (Indian) f      ");

People carry an assortment of self protection hardware, from sprays, shock devices units to the hand gun or just the plain old rifle each has an accepted importance. It is well documented that as a symbol of defence and power a weapons potential is usually sought after. City wise teenagers are familiar enough with hand weapons to establish their self esteem by their use. In modern warfare particular language styles have developed so as to do business and take him out of the equation. This casually reinforces the modern day acceptance that some form of peace maker is a necessary evil. Weaponry for Health, its purpose in contemporary Internal Martial Arts Strictly speaking teachers of Traditional Weapons (in the many martial arts systems) regret this easy modern acceptance. Firstly, the character development required is at odds with human sensitivities. Only marginal skills, whether physical or mental, are required to pull a trigger. Hence the quick demise of the natural (and difficult to learn) Bow and Arrow in the battle field. The shot and musket was so effective without the need for exceptional specialist skills. Why Practice Traditional Weaponry Weaponry gives both the benefits of mental training and increase in the strength and co-ordination of the practitioner. Traditionally Martial Arts uses Swords of different weights and shapes and sticks of various forms, short, Six Foot Pole or Long Pole(12ft) being popular and accessible to most cultures. The strong broad back of the broadsword allows defense postures such as Entwining about the head and upper torso. The blade back can be reinforced by the shoulders or arms which would be impossible with the double edged rapier. This allows successful defensive techniques because it strengthens the blade against the power of other heavier weapons. Defensive techniques can be reinforced by hand or body. No, I would suggest that for a clear exposition of martial spirit one has to struggle to refer to the cultural perspectives within martial biographies and the hotch potch of “historic” texts. Again one must be careful as although mythology is fascinating its relevance is questionable. So what are you likely to find if you do this research? EARLY HERITAGE OF THE TAI CHI CHUAN SABRE Like other civilisations there are no clear accounts of early fighting methods or weaponry in the Chinese stone age. Weapons existed before Chinese calligraphy was invented and their origins were usually attributed to early mythical rulers. The first weapons made of stone were recorded by Shen Yung (2838-2698B.C.). Shen Yung was one of the three mythical rulers along with Huang Ti and Fu Hsi. He is associated with agriculture and the use of herbs as medicine as well as being a teacher of husbandry. There is no contradiction between Chinese medicine and Martial Arts because they are inextricably bound through their common goals of longevity and good health. Shen Yungs documentation of early weapons described stone tipped spears. Later cutting weapons were out of jade, melted gold, while armour was made from leather. It was not until the Chou dynasty 1233-255 that more complex metals like bronze were used. There was a similar evolution in the materials used for body armour such as buffalo hide, paper and lacquer to metal. For the common man the primary weapon was a plain straight stick with a thickened end or crook. Later a weighted stick, the cudgel differed only in handiness and could also be thrown. Another line of evolution was from a club to the mace, a symbol of established authority which came in various forms, half, rounded, pointed and obelisk like. A split stick with a stone or piece of metal fixed produced the axe, Emperor Huang Ti (2608-2598 BC) made a battle axe of gold recorded as the first military use of the axe. The sword originated from the pointed stick, a weapon used for throwing or thrusting, which we know as the spear. If a spear is thrown the enemy could always throw it back so a hook or barb was introduced to capture the flesh. In the spear we find the origins of the sword because in fighting with the spear the top inevitably is broken of      ");

Depending on the style of internal martial arts there is in a sense a conflict between the circular and the straight. T o perform any leg action one normally employs an image of intent which is initially at least straight. In time the circularity of expressing a kick is an enjoyable action. Leg Movements are continuous actions that are circular. The body will perform accurate techniques with certainty and ease. Most forms and sets are simple exercise regimes that describe circles, curves, arcs, spirals, and parabolas. All kicks are produced by dynamic actions that involve broad and regulated body awareness. The kick that is performed without grace and style is encumbered by misplaced or underachieved effort it is easier to find the trick of it. This is natural. Powerful kicking is in internal martial arts established by power actions being rooted in the stillness and solidity of the torso. One cannot find torso stillness without developing the easy use of rooted vitality in the legs that generate the internal as an expression of waist actions. Ones technique is limited only by our strength of desire for large physical expression. Keep the body in balance by joining the muscles together to improve solidity and ease of purpose. The basis of a good kicking action is generated by the elasticity of the waist and dynamism of the supporting leg. Regulate your breathing. Do not grasp onto balance or thrust out with one joint. If you practice hard at an advanced stage of kicking you can allow the mind to effortlessly impinging on each technique to guide the body into harmony. Be meditative, develop self-familiarity and skill in reflective awareness. The young like to kick, the elderly are less inclined - to sail through the air at head height. Dynamic kicks like the Tornado or Crecent kick are waist promoting techniques that portrays flowing creative energy by rooting and counter actions. Fist techniques resolve issues      ");

The symbol of the circle is common to many martial movements, and is present in the philosophical foundations underlining the martial arts. In Taoists tests one is advised to avoid possessing a mind which is narrow or myopic. What can we shape out of this undertaking, tangibly called Life? The Politics of Enlightenment addresses some of the common questions stemming from this human but deeply existential root. I have chosen a form of reflection which I hope is accessible to the reader who has some interest in the insights of Classical Oriental Wisdom in relation to the forces and perspectives of todays world, this Modernity. No knowledge is presupposed on your part. Naturally, to accept any change in position entails the will to open the arenas of your own questioning in a way that promotes creative fluidity and change in the simplest of everyday thoughts. By this method (in my madness) I trust we will make something of a multifaceted journey through the politics of our enlightenment, touching the highs and the lows, and, in doing so, embrace the nature of humanheartedness through the call of Wisdom. It is probably true to say that few people make any prolonged attempt to achieve the tactile and strategic skills necessary to accomplish the fundamentals of the push-hands method. Yet it is an essential part of the internal martial arts and extremely useful in terms of emotional health and physical balance. Most teachers would agree that much time and misunderstanding is generated by the novice. The most common of which among western novices is the notion that Push hands is meant to be a combative test of personal prowess. It isn’t. Neither should it be used (exclusively) as colourfully constructed metaphor of life passing by and its relevance to our personal lives. This makes things too understandable, overly visionary, and a little too nicely new age. Nothing comes that easily to hand in martial technique as a rule. The Push Hands Method requires mental application emotional balance, intuitive understanding of energetic expression coupled with a refined sense of conservation of position and purpose. Changing fluidly through the postures in a meaningful way is paramount. The body, emotion and strength must work with responsive clarity. This can be accomplished by gradual insight, research, friendship and patience. Breathing and push hand method If it is possible devote considerable time to acquiring deep four cycle breathing. This is essential for this will exercise the internal musculature and open the lower back (fire gate of the Kidneys -Jing) with each breath. This third part leans towards the more advanced problems of evolving a multi-dimensional practice approach whereby you may extend your appreciation of the Art of Pushing Hands. The Art within Pushing Hands Method and its Demands It is no mean feat to develop the rudiments and technical skill necessary to perform well, the solo handed set routines whatever the style. It is one thing to connect various postures together but quite another to develop what is both complex and expressive in nature. The Martial Arts hard or soft are language forms defined by their principles and metaphors. A passion for language and expression is at the heart of the internal martial arts. It is a struggle to develop. At times a call of passion. Maybe we should duck and cover? But in time a true interest in Martial Arts will develop a passion for internal sense and appreciation. The internal arts have an advantage over some martial arts because “The Three Sister Arts of Tai Chi Chuan, Hsing-I and PaKua Chang” are directed by theory and metaphor towards passionately expressive technique. Is the Pushing Hands Method essential to Tai Chi Chuan? I have come across two commonly motivated responses as to why people pursue Tai Chi Chuan. Firstly, and perhaps appropriately, the mass of people will reside in the realm of the casual practitioner. In the main they are motivated to restore balance, stabilise health and feel relaxation. They like the look of Tai Chi and its gentle appeal. The martial contents will probably be given a cursory acceptance as it is a soft art just for self defence or something equally vague and diffident. Therefore wisdom that does not increase by the day diminishes the day. Chinese Proverbs. Wisdom is difficult to attain. Knowledge does not tell us what is important here and now. The path to Wisdom is no simple struggle as we must encourage our Will to approach life in the manner of the Wisest of being. This was, for the ancient classical thinkers of Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism, an undertaking of spirit, embracing heart, and heart broadening the limits of mind -a journey which will require a strong and enduring effort.It is the quest to see the essentiality of ones own existence to overcome the many and self-seeking values of the modern age. If we are to counterbalance this age, then we must approach the issues of the day with open heart and mind, and listen for the unfolding of our spiritual calling. We may call upon the heritage of Knowledge,Understanding and Wisdom to open up the transactions of Modernity to the human face of Wise disposition.And for why? Because for individual, nation, creed , modernity offers no real meet place. Modernity is born of the wants of the few, overcoming the lives of the many.It is an age of transition and transformation at the expense of simple true purpose. Todays self is characterised by the struggle of material purpose chasing yesterdays action. There are many stories that characterise these affairs of the world, of personal struggle to reach the furthest of shores. In particular, there is an old Zen story about a monk who led a very simple and direct life. His name was Rokan. He lived in a hut with no possessions. One day, a thief entered Rokans hut while he was out. But the thief, looking to takesomething of value, found nothing and the monk returned. In the previous introduction to the Pushing Hands method the ability to interpret anothers movements through the development of movement skills and perspective was hopefully outlined clearly. (Barring the typing errors and the like, mea culpa with apologies.) Anyway no matter. What is perhaps most striking about the pursuit of movement theory and practice in the internal martial arts, -its technology, is the subtlety of contradictions necessary to make progress! The ability to work within the framework of concepts and the principles that Tai Chi Chuan theory extols needs to be primarily experienced rather than immediately understood. Many people like to argue the reverse, but do squirrels live in trees? Commonly it appears that the personal agendas focused around pursing Tai Chi “technology” can hinder significantly more than help. To struggle forward is not always progress. Internal arts are meant to be savored. Please, be at ease. Enjoy! If inexperience thwarts your progress then understanding is both pre-empted and or simply misinterpreted. Correcting the way one makes an effort to learn can be paramount to adjust both reasoning and sensibilities. This will pay more than technical dividends to the bank of your learning curve. There are few short cuts. The learning of Tai Chi Chuan is complex, however the exposition of the internal martial arts is fundamentally based in simplicity. The expression of the push hands demands dynamic liveliness. The Mind is trained to be freely expressive through pushing hands with the success of each application being a temporary guide to its usefulness. A series of two player push hands techniques. The name means Eight Diagrams (or Trigrams) Palm. It is sometimes written instead as Pa Kua Chang - Pa Kua Ch’uan -Baguaquan, or simply abbreviated to Bagua. Baguazhang is soundly linked to Taijiquan (T’ai Chi Ch’uan), and Xingyiquan (Hsing I) which are sometimes referred to as the Three Sister Arts. These internal martial arts rely heavily on the classical and cosmological views developed in Taoist alchemy and medicine for their foundations. To understand the complexity of internal Chinese martial arts a brief excursion into Taoist thinking is worthwhile for any serious enquiry. The Foundation Thinking of Baguazhang is Rooted in Philosophy Baguazhang (Pa Kua Chang - Pa-kua chuan) is purportedly derived from the metaphysical diagrams generated from the I-Ching -The Book of Changes. Oldest parts date from 800BC more recent 200AD.The I-Ching was originally a collection of linear signs, perhaps best seen as code. (not unlike binary code) Below are typical examples arranged in hexa-gram sets. The broken lines yin lines represented no -the unbroken yang lines yes conveniently serves as code complex enough to be used as oracle cards which portrayed a vision of the Taoist Way -where one is aware and becomes in harmony with the process of change. The key code of yang lines balanced with yin lines were arranged in Tri-grams. These tri-grams were arranged into the Pa Kua or eight correspondences which sought to describe the basis of change developing from one thing to two to three to all things. The Tao. The Taoist vision thus at least schematically demonstrated multiplicity of yin-yang possibilities and interrelations through the Pa-kua and other diagrams. Such diagrams served to classically illustrate a interwoven selection of key ideas germane to Taoist visions of change and internal martial arts. Two of the most well kn      ");

Advancing and retreating require turning the body and changing the steps. The energy of the body is rooted in the stepping. To seek out the curve one must not linearly advance or linearly retreat alone. The corners of ones movements should be accommodated. To change well is to ensure balance and free expression of technique. The Five Stepping Gates For instance, in the advancing motions be aware of both left and right. In retreating similarly turn and step towards the left and right as a general rule. All of the advancing and retreating movements are like this. Because turning and changing allow you to use the retreat as an advance therefore it is not a true retreat. A true retreat would mean defeat. The boxing treatises say, Advancing is advancing. Retreating is also advancing, There is no contradiction here for as the classics say, Every step advances forwards; then you are without peer under heaven.     ");
